The Mechanical Technician is responsible for the management of all college vehicles and various equipment on campus. In addition to these responsibilities the position has department budgetary duties and is required to be available to assist with other maintenance issues in the areas of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.


  1. Maintain detailed records of all maintenance tasks while performing a program of preventative maintenance, inspections, and repair of all Facilities Management (FM) vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to vehicles, utility carts, tractors, mowers, generators, and fire pumps.
  1. Responsible for recommending maintenance solutions, requesting contract bids, and assisting the M&O Supervisor in the execution of contracts and project work.
  1. Support the M&O staff/shops as directed by the M&O Supervisor.
    1. Assist with electrical, building maintenance, plumbing, and heating/venting/air-conditioning shops in the performance of mid to advanced level installation.
    2. Completing electronic work requests, troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs, and providing operational support for the various computer control systems.
  2. Responsible for requisitioning all materials, supplies and equipment required to perform the assigned work. This responsibility includes but is not limited to transportation, fuel, and equipment budgets.
  3. Responsible for the fueling of FM vehicles and equipment weekly and monitor diesel tank fuel levels monthly.
  4. Oversee the continual update and execution of preventative maintenance activities related to FM vehicles and equipment, as well as supporting other preventative maintenance activities in campus buildings as directed in support of the larger FM preventative maintenance program across campus.
  5. Perform all work in a safe and responsible manner:
    1. Maintain an orderly shop, work area, inventory supply, and work sites on campus.
    2. Know and use proper personal protection equipment and proper procedures in all chemical handling, mechanical tools, confined space entry, and fire/explosion hazards,
    3. Train and supervise work-study students in all work and safety matters supporting M&O activities.
  6. On-call for safety/emergency response and after-hour call-backs, and perform all other duties as assigned by the M&O Supervisor.


  • Strong oral communications skills.
  • Ability to use discretion in sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet our requirements to become an authorized driver.
  • Able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.


  • High school diploma
  • Three to five years of experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance with ability to maintain and repair vehicles, small engines, diesel engines, and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Google applications and MS Office programs (word, excel, etc.) as well as possessing good oral and written communication skills.


  • Supplementary vocational training in the area of engine repair and maintenance
  • Experience as a welder/metalworker.


  • An acceptance of and commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

  • Must be able to assent to Covenant College's Staff Commitments.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.


  • Standing and walking for the majority of the day
  • Lifting, pushing, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling at least 50% of the day.
  • Sitting less than 10% of the day
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. regularly
  • Environmental conditions: humidity, heat, cold, wet conditions, noise, and vibration
