POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director provides strategic leadership for the communication and public relations efforts of Covenant College through print, electronic media, special events and other initiatives. The primary focus of this role will be supporting admissions efforts and collaborating closely with the Associate Director of Digital Marketing and team when crafting strategic marketing messaging and communications for various channels and campaigns.

This role is responsible for the creation, implementation and oversight of the college's strategic plan for communications; managing internal communications and supporting public information efforts, including the management of media relations, development and distribution of news releases, op eds, fact sheets and feature stories.

This individual must demonstrate good news judgment and outstanding public relations and journalism skills; cultivate relationships that advance the college; and create materials that reflect positively on the college.

The Assistant Director also acts as an internal consultant in matters relating to communications and advises senior management when necessary regarding public relations matters both on and off-campus.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership and oversight for admissions materials and channels to ensure quality, accuracy and brand consistency.
  • Draft marketing emails, social posts, brochure copy, ads, and various other pieces for Covenant's admissions marketing purposes.
  • Collaborate and/or lead creative direction with internal partners.
  • Plan and implement a comprehensive public relations program to promote the College's mission and strategic plan, with special emphasis on media relations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media representatives.
  • Develop a plan for identifying and communicating unique faculty and student stories to appropriate local, regional and national media outlets.
  • Create student/faculty/staff profiles and success stories for internal and external use.
  • Coordinate and direct news and photographic coverage of campus events involving students, parents, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni.
  • Monitor external news feeds for potential story opportunities that can be distributed on social media and other channels.
  • Serve as a point of contact for external media requests.
  • Work with senior leadership and others to design and implement crisis communication plans.
  • Serve as media advisor to the president and cabinet.
  • Work directly with outside public relations agencies to build brand equity and enhance the image of the institution.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • 1-2 years of experience working in related fields.
  • Bachelor's Degree

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Prior work with a liberal arts college/university is preferred.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • An acceptance of and commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
  • An understanding of the mission and purpose of Covenant College.
  • Must be able to assent to Covenant College's Staff Commitments.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This role is expected to be performed on campus unless otherwise directed or arranged for and operates primarily in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Remain in a stationary position at least 90% of the workday.
  • Lifting: occasionally; classified as light, lifting or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) up to 10 lbs.
